Heroes of Hope
Children's Mental Health Day
May 2012
IATA Member, Diane Tonkyn, and colleague Mickey Hampton led 1st through 5th graders in this project called "Heroes of Hope" for Children's Mental Health Day 2012 at United Action for Youth in Iowa City. The participants are part of an after school enrichment program and have been identified as at risk due to academic and behavioral issues.
They were read the book "Of thee I Sing" by President Barak Obama. They were then encouraged to identify their Hero of Hope: the person or persons that have made an impression on them. They were taught a metal embossing technique and were to depict their Hero. These were then colored with sharpie markers and adhered to cardstock. The children then wrote about their hero around the embossed image. These were then connected using ribbon to create a group quilt that represented all of their heroes. The piece is now hanging in their elementary school.
